MYTHS AND HEROES I am going to talk about the notion of myths and heroes in which we have studied several texts about wars, slavery... that's the mains topics present in this notion of myths and heroes. First of all I would like to give a definition of MYTHS, It may be defined by four definitions that are : An ancient story about gods, heroes and magic. A popular belief or tradition embodying the ideals and institutions of a society. An unfounded or false notion. A theme or character type embodying an idea. Then, I would like to give a definition of HEROES, that may be defined by four definitions too that are : A mythological or legendary figure with great strength or ability. A person admired for his achievements noble qualities and great courage. The main character in a literary or dramatic work, an event, period, or movement. An object of extreme admiration and devotion : icon, role model. In order to illustrate the n...

« between different civilizations of the world.

Consequently we can put this text in the notion of Myths and Heroes because of the traditions of Maoris’ tribe.

In a second time, I would like to talk about the very famous speech of Martin Luther King Junior I Have a Dream .

He pronounces his speech in Washington on the steps at the Lincoln memorial on August 28, 1963.

This speech shows that in all points MLK is against segregation and injustice between black people and white people.

Indeed, segregation in the USA and also in all the world is a very serious problem.

Black people cannot have the right of vote, are low paid, cannot go to university and lives in ghettos.

In the mind of MLK the kinds do not be like this ; he dreams of an America in which black people will have more liberty, will choose of their own future and destiny and will not be segregated.

He believes in brotherhood and wants all men to be equal.

His speech resonates in the minds of black people like a deliverance because he hopes that one day all men can be equal and respects them.

The facts mentioned by MLK will be forever in the minds of all men in the world, mainly in the minds of black people because this speech have change a lot of things, indeed one year after the speech of MLK, the President Lyndon Johnson made the vote on the Civil Rights Act in 1964 which outlaws racial discrimination in employment, transportation.

The following year, despite the ban, many blacks are still violated in the exercise of their right to vote.

Consequently we can put this speech of Martin Luther King Junior in this notion of Myths and Heroes because he has change the lives of many people by his temerity to say what he thinks.

Finally, in order to best illustrate this notion of Myths and Heroes, I have chosen one personal document which is a picture by Ben Turnbull named Hero II .

This picture shows a fireman in the foreground, in the background we can see cartoon bubbles.

But it’s not a normal fireman, he is constitute of several heroes of Marvel cartoon like Spiderman, Captain America, Batman, Hulk etc..

He is represents thereby in order to show that firemen are daily heroes.

Indeed, they risks their lives to save others, this is their job, their duty like Marvel superheroes.

The bubbles in the background maybe represent all that the people may think or say about the firemen.

Also the firemen are heroes, we can say that because from many generations to ours many people has decided to do this job, and many children dreams of becoming firemen, they read some BDs like Marvel with always superheroes, they play with firemen toys (trucks, scales..) So, in all plans we can say that firemen are heroes themselves but are heroes in people’s minds too.

In conclusion, we can say that myths and heroes surround us everyday, talk about the notion of myths and heroes is a sign of recognition by “normal people” to all what they do, to their courage or their achievements or to their traditions too, that may change some people’s lives or minds.. »
