"In Back of the Real" is an earlier poem of Ginsberg, it was written in 1954 during Ginsberg's time in San Jose, California. It denounces the prevailing values of modern society – industrialization and war -- values that Ginsberg believes have brought a kind of destruction to the original promise of the American nation. This poem can also be read as an outline for "Sunflower Sutra" --- In fact, the setting : a railway yard in San Jose, California., the subject which is a sunflower and the major contrast of the poem --- between the sunflower's organic, naturalistic beauty and the harsh urban, industrial setting --- are almost the same. Ginsberg by the title “in back of the real” sets up the possibility of a metaphysical meditation on the American industrialized society. First, we'll comment on G specific vision of the industrial world, and then we'll focus on the structure of the poem to end up with the connections between Sunflower sutra and In Back of the Real.

« - It is obvious that the sunflower represents America, a land once filled with the promise of progress and advancement.

The locomotive was the symbol of that progress - a machine powerfulenough to connect the coasts and bring about a revolution in transportation and human ingenuity.

Asthe railroad yard it represents a way to progress. - Sunflower means to suggest an America that has been tarnished and battered, but which also contains the ability to be redeemed and to be beautiful once again. - Ginsberg ends the poem saying this flower has hope within it = “Flower nonetheless”“Flower of world.” Although the sunflower of the human collective soul is tainted by its cover of the grime ofmodern existence, Ginsberg's final vision reveals his optimistic hope for the enlightenment and salvation ”with the form of the great yellow Rose in your brain” that are also the subject of Blake'spoem "Ah! Sun-flower". As a Conclusion: - Ginsberg ends with the beginning of this sermon.

Humanity, and America, are not composed of the grime of industry, the greed of corporatism, and the violence of war.

People are “sunflowersinside “This is a vision of America as a new kind of locomotive and a vision of the desolate landscapeas a picture of beauty. - G sees himself as a prophet whose job is to show the beauty to a country that has become rotten at its core.. »
