This extract deals with the decision of Folarin Solaja to send away his children in England where his older brother Dele will take care of them and keep an eye on them before he’ll be able to get out of Nigeria. He’ll can join them, keep on writing and be safe. It deals with the little arguing between Papa and his brother Tunde to convince him to flee Nigeria and protect his children.

Before analyse the text, it’s necessary to tell that throughout the novel Sade’s thoughts are mixed up with the narration. She’ll remembers some advices of her father or mother and she’ll quote them because she knows them so well. These words are sort of a guideline to her because of the education she had received. It also shows that she’s forced to grow up to quickly and to put herself in the shoes of adults to try to cope with the situation.

o If he goes to London he’ll be able to go on writing articles and inform people and defend the
truth.
o He’ll be safe and his children would have his father.
Grief is the only thing at that moment.
The references to Uncle Tune’s job are very important; the conversation between him and Folarin is quite
aggressive and look like a trial.

As a lawyer he knows how to make people react and how to convince
them to be careful.

It shows importance of justice while they suffer from the greatest injustice you can
ever impose on children and a family.
Nigerian justic e is corrupted and won’t save him: he has to go.
Everything change, we can see that Sade starts acting like a mother figure for Femi.
L.59, and also the fact that
the world collapses: everyday life is disrupted; Tunde is not at work l.5, l.103, and l.99.
Implies with Sade who
burst into tears at the end, she realizes her mom tried to warn her father but it was useless because he didn’t
listen.
She had foreseen the tragedy: it costed her life.
Now they are alone..
