heart defect , and couldn’t on any mission in space.
Progressively, Jerome became an
alcoholic because of his idleness , staying at home all the days preparing DNA samples .
A week before Vincent’s first space mission , the program director was murdered and
the police began investigating, which could compromise his mission and also his
identity.
During the investigation, one of his eyelashes is discovered.
They discovered
the DNA of an In -Valid, in Gattaca: the presence of this unexpected DNA attracted the
attention of the police .
He had to be very careful .
The situation became even more
dangerous because of Vincent’s brother, Anton, was one of the detectives and was
very suspicious of Vincent, although he didn’t recognize him.
But by insisting, Anton
discovered his secret , and the two brothers started to compete again as they had used
to do when they were children by swimming in the ocean.
Vincent beat his brother,
and saved him from drowning.
He proved himself again that he could beat “valid”
men.
Finally, his broth er didn’t say anything about his discovery .
Before Vincent’s
departure, Jerome gave him enough samples of DNA for two entire lifetimes.
Vincent
took off in the rocket on his flight to Titan , and his associate, Jerome, committed
suicide.
Key concepts
Genetics: Genetics and genetic engineering take a very important place in the movie.
Everything in this world is based on genes.
The entire story is concerned about the
discrimination provoked by gene manipulation.
The level of knowledge in this domain
permits all the different genetic manipulation.
Determinism : In Gattaca there is a fo rm of determinism because we are determined by our
genes.
People who are In -Valids cannot choose their proper way of life: they are relegated to
menial works (such) as janitors or waiters.
Discrimination : In Gattaca, there is a real discrimination based on genes, called genoism.
People who have the good genes are favored and have great privileges.
Explanation
“ I not only think that we will tamper with Mother Nature, I think Mother Nature wants us
too” , Willard Gaylin
It means that humans naturally want to alter what Nature has created.
We can learn the
"secrets" of nature and use them to our benefit
“They used to say that a child conceived in love has a greater chance of happiness.
They
don’t say that anymore “, Vincent
In the past, people thought that a child conceived naturally would be happier, even if he had
some imperfections.
But now, it has become normal to b e born in laboratory.
A child
conceived naturally no longer has advantages on these children, not even happiness.
“My real rés umé was in my cells “, Vincent
In the world of Gattaca, people are entirely determined by their genes and so, by their DNA.
You can learn a lot about a person by having access to his genetic information.
For Vincent,.
