In order to deal with the notion PLACES & FORMS OF POWER, we studied the history of South Africa since 1948, when the government legally decided to make a difference between racial groups : it was called APARTHEID. With this official policy of racial segregation, enforced by the National Party government, black people were treated as second-class citizens. « himself because he has had the courage to resist. In 1912, a left-wing political party was founded : African National Congress (ANC), its purpose was to defend the rights of blacks.

But it was banned in 1960.

The people who sided with this party were considered as a terrorist and were imprisoned.

This is the case of Nelson Mandela who was the leader and who spent 27 years in jail because he wanted to defend the black people's rights.

He is considered as hero because he has sacrificed his life to fight for freedom and equality; and also considered as a legend because he had changed history. Indeed the South African anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela became the first democratically elected president of SA from 1994 to 1999 (3 years after the end of apartheid).

Nowadays white people and black people has more or less the same rights.

In 2008, the first African-American president was elected in the USA Barack Obama.

But there's still a gap between the white and black people in terms of employment rate and living condition for example. »
