« Today I'm going to tell you about Fort Boyard.

The history of Fort Boyard is a bit special.

But what is its history? First of all, I'll introduce you to the fort, then I'll tell you about its history and construction and finally, I'll tell you about the TV game show that you all must know about Fort Boyard. So where is the fort? The fort is located in the Atlantic Ocean, near La Rochelle, between several islands, like the island of Ré, the island of Aix, or the island of Oléron.

The fort is visible from several beaches on these islands and the large beach of Fouras. The fort can only be visited from the outside, and in particular with a boat cruise. All the surrounding islands, as well as La Rochelle and Fouras, offer cruises around Fort Boyard, almost every day.

Here we see one of the excursions offered from Fouras, including a visit to the neighboring island of Aix. The fort is built on a sandbank called the "longe de boyard".

Hence, the name “Boyard” is phonetically close to the Dutch word for "sandbank".

That is why the fort is called "Fort Boyard".

You may also have noticed that I mentioned the town of Fouras, which gives its name to "Père Fouras", one of the emblems of the TV game show I will talk about later. The construction of the fort was not done in one go.

Indeed, the construction project was postponed several times.

Its construction was interrupted for 30 years after the English managed to cross between the two islands and destroyed the entire French fleet on the Charente.

It was not until 1848, when the base of the fort emerged two meters above the highest water level, that construction of the fort itself could begin. The year 1852 marked the end of the construction of the ground floor of the fort. In 1856, the second floor of the fort was completed._ In 1859, the fort was equipped with its cannons, only 30 of the 74 mainly planned. However, the fort had become useless even before its construction was completed.

The fort had been built to compensate for the range of the cannons on the two islands, but the artillery had improved and the fire from the Isle of Aix and the Isle of Oleron could now cross paths.

The fort's most famous function was as a prison, but it only lasted 18 months. Finally, I'm going to talk about the television game Fort Boyard. This is a television game show in which a team of six contestants usually performs various physical and intellectual tests to win a treasure.

This treasure will then bring money to the association that is represented in each episode. On 30 June 1990, the first episode of Les Clés de Fort Boyard was shot.

It was broadcast one week later, on 7 July 1990, and was a great success.

This success has continued ever since, as the show celebrated its 32nd anniversary this year. The program has been so successful that it has been adapted in 30 countries.. »
