« INTRODUCTION I/DEFINITION: II/ THE CAUSES OF POLYGAMY: 1-INFERTILITY OR ONLY FEMALE CHILDREN 2-LOVE MARRIAGE 3- FAMILY PRESSURE III/ THE CONSEQUENCES OF POLYGAMY 1-NEGATIVE OUTCOMES OF COWIVES 2- POSITIVE OUTCOMES OF COWIVES CONCLUSION INTRODUCTION Man has always had a desire to dominate his neighbour.

This will can be from natural or religious sources.

Most often the object of domination is the woman.

So the more women you have, the more your power increases, especially in traditional Africa.

It is in this perspective that we will analyze this phenomenon called polygamy.

To do so, we will first talk about the reasons that lead people to indulge in this practice before listing the consequences.

Polygamy has become very common in numerous cultures particularly in Islamic society. Islam allows men to marry up to four wives at one time but the condition is to maintain equality and Justice in all the possession whatever a man holds in material means . In Muslim families the textual basis is provided by the Holy Quran for the practice of polygamy: "Marry women of your choice two, or three, or four, but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them) then only one".

While in many cites it has been claimed that if a man is unable to maintain justice and equality to treat all the wives then the above verse is interpreted as in favour of monogamy .

The majority of Muslims have accepted official polygamy.

In the Muslim world, polygamy is acknowledged because it is supported and associated with religious doctrine as well as a fair and legal way of relationship.

It protects the families from contracting sexually transmitted diseases and possible deviation to an illegal sexual association . I/DEFINITION: Usage note: especially to qualify the fact that a man has several wives. Polygamy is a type of relationship that typically involves a person marrying more than one partner.1When a woman marries more than one man, it’s called polyandry.

Polygamy is the opposite of monogamy, where one person marries one spouse.Polygamie is either illegal or discouraged in most regions.

In some cases, polygamy isn’t explicitly unlawful. However, bigamy is.

Bigamy occurs when a person who’s married marries another person who does not know their partner is already married. II/ THE CAUSES OF POLYGAMY: *The causes are of several orders: religious, social, economic etc....

For those concerning religion, it authorizes the man to marry several women and can even be considered as "souna" (practice or recommendations of the Prophet PSL) on conditions to respect equality between women.

Many men tend to apply this rule.

For example in our society many religious men devote themselves to this practice, this is the case of my eldest who had four wives and several children before he died. *In terms of social reasons polygamy allows man to show his power; his virility but also to show that he is as capable if not more capable than his age group.

The man indulges in polygamy to have a large family, which can help him when he is old.

For example, a grandfather of mine in Tivaouane who has four wives and about twenty children was very respected and treated well by his children from different mothers.

This is one of the advantages of polygamy. *As for the economic reasons for polygamy, they are more decisive; indeed in traditional Africa several women several children were synonymous with power and wealth J the work in the fields was provided by the families.

Nowadays men are ready to marry the latter if they are productive.

Which means a non-producing woman is out of luck.

Hence the economic nature of polygamy.

Men have the courage to marry women who are real arms that can help them in the field work, in the picking, in the processing and in the marketing of the products. The first theme was generated from the verbatim of the first question which was asked to polygamous women.

The co-wives shared their several experiences and reasons why they allowed their husbands for 2nd or 3rd marriage. Following subthemes were included in these main theme categories. 1- Infertility or only female children Mrs.

Tanveer was 39 years old lady.

She had a male child during the interview.

She was the first wife of her husband and it was a happy arranged marriage.

After 11 years passed when she had not conceived her in-laws forced her husband for co-wife.

When her husband refused, she said that she convinced and allowed her husband for second marriage.

She believed that by allowing for a co-wife, she too would be blessed to have a child.

She stated, “When I allowed my husband to marry a second wife, then God blessed me to have a child” (translated from Urdu to English).

Mrs.

Kamal was also a childless first wife from the past 6-8 years and she accepted a co-wiferather than divorce.

She tried her best to convince her husband not to get married to another woman but she was not succeeded.

Though later on, she had a good relation with 2nd wife.

One female Mrs. Abdullah was feeding a new born baby she was 3rd wife of her husband.

She was blended with her husband by love marriage.
