Life of Pi is a novel which was written by Yann Martel. He wrote his novel as his last novel was a flop. In his notes, he explains us why he chose to write it and give reasons to his readers to make them believe in his story, which is the opposite of his last novel which actions didn’t seemed very true!
Let’s analyst the author’s notes, in the first part we’ll do a summary of his notes, in the second part, we will deal with the analyze of it and in the last part, we will see the reason of Yann Martel wrote his story.
«
The author however is suspicious, he poses leading questions to find out the motivation of
Mr.Adirubasamy, finally his curiosity is piqued and he asks to hear the story.
The storyteller
though places a condition to telling the story; the author must pay proper attention, which
cour se the eager author accepts.
So the story is told, in the telling Mr.Adirubasamy mentally
transports the author through the town, to the botanical gardens and an old zoo.
At the end
of the story he encourages the a uthor to contact the principal character o f the tale, who
now lives in Canada.
The author decides Pi's story must be told in the first person: "in his voice and through his
eyes." Now we're ready to launch into Pi's story.
Last but not least, Yann Martel uses devices to draw our attention to the authenticity
of his story, in order to portray a more realistic tale.
Indeed, he captures our attention
thanks to three proofs.
To begin with, he tells us that he contacted his main character, Pi Patel, in order to get first
hand information about his adventures and his trials.
Mr.Patel also helps the author more by
deciding to give him his diary that he wrote during the incident.
As we can see at line 24,
page XIII, “he showed me the diary he kept during the events”
Next, the author emphasizes the fact t hat Mr.
Patel’s story has become famous since
apparently many journalists have written articles about him.
As we can see at line 25 page
XII “yellowed newspaper clippings that made him briefly, obscurely famous”
Thirdly, Yann Martel alludes to trustworthy official sources that he has received from the
Japanese Ministry of Transport.
Towards the end of the Author’s notes he mentions how
grateful he’s to the three Japanese officials.
According ti the author, line 27 page XII “ I
received a tape and a report f rom the Japanese Ministry of Transport”.
These three proofs emphasise the author’s need to justify his story, t increase the reader’s
belief in the fantastic events to come, to help the reader to put faith in the almost religious
parable complete with miracles and apparitions that he will tell.
We could perhaps wonder if
the author wants to help us, the reader, to enter the world of the story more easily and to
understand his message.
I think that this novel is today translate in thirty languages because of his inspiration of
reality.
In opposite with the novel whose facts were incredible, we now here that the actions
are true and thanks to that, I want to read the book! The author’s notes light the story and
its characters, we meet with the main characters, and we learn how the story begun..
