1) Do you think that Carol's job justifies the phrase: "She
felt the whole of a human being" in the last sentence?
Carol's job is only a monotonous office-work.
It possesses
ali the typical routine, full of strenuous useless details implied
by this sort
of job.
The atmosphere is dull, and the life is
unhealthy.
:Resides, ironically enough the War Risk Insurance
bureau goes on working after the Armistice: this stresses
the meaninglessness
of such an occupation.
Y et this work represents more for Carol than it really is: it is
the symbol
of ber opening to the surrounding world.
So far,
she bad only known the limited and closed world
of a small
·midwestem town, but now she discovers new horizons.
She cao come in contact with people from distant and different
parts
of the world, and thus feels socially useful.
Since she finds out what the life
of a business woman is, she
becomes aware
of ber freedom as an individual.
Just like
men, she cao have friends and enemies, but before ali, she
cao have
"a free sunday", where she can be the master of ber
own time.
Carol bas realized the vanity
of too long domestic chores
for feminity's sake.
She
bas come to a new perception of
herself as a woman in society, and thus considers work as a
way towards self-respect, independence and freedom.
This
is why she can say that she "felt the whole of a human being"..
