A sixth of its territory is inside the arctic circle. It is the largest of the Scandinavian countries.
Northern Sweden is mountainous, covered by lakes and forests. In the South, a vast undulating plain is inhabited by the majority of the population. The coastal area is bordered by a string of more than 20 000 islands.
