Overview Long ago the Dravidian language family probably dominated the southern and western portions of South Asia, while Austro-Asiatic languages probably prevailed on the Ganges Plain to the northeast. Sino-Tibetan languages were probably spoken, as they are today, in the mountains and foothills of the Himalayas. But about 3,500 years ago, invaders from the northwest brought Indo-European languages to the northern part of South Asia. These languages were the precursors of today's Indic and Iranian languages.
