Languages of North Africa - geography. Overview Three main language families dominate North Africa: Niger-Kordofanian, Nilo-Saharan, and Afro-Asiatic. Over the centuries, speakers of Arabic and Berber languages, in the Afro-Asiatic family, have occupied much of the central Sahara, displacing speakers of Nilo-Saharan languages. Off the Atlantic coast, most people on the Canary Islands speak Spanish, while most people on the Cape Verde Islands speak a creole that combines elements of Portuguese and nearby Niger-Kordofanian languages.<...
