Languages of East Asia - geography. Overview Today most East Asians speak Sino-Tibetan languages. This language family includes two main branches: Tibeto-Burman and Chinese, or Sinitic, languages. The latter branch includes Mandarin Chinese, the world's most widely spoken language, which has more than 800 million native speakers. The Chinese language gradually spread along with Chinese civilization from the Huang He Valley beginning about 3,000 years ago. Speakers of other languages were absorbed into the Chinese population or sought refuge in the mountains of southern China and Southeast Asia (see Oceania Map Trek).
