Industrialisation
(Introduction)
The world, and in particular Europe, was marked by industrialization in the 19th and 20th
century.
This period of history interests us because the Herrenschmidt family on which we
work is directly concerned.

The Herrenschmidt family's tannery was once located near the European Parliament.
The
Herrenschmidt family were known to have tanneries in Wacken from 1812 to 1968.

Alfred Herrenschmidt got down to it and opened a warehouse in Berlin.
Year in and year
out, the company employs around 280 people.
And this for almost a century.
But, in 1968,
the ultimate captain of industry in the lineage - “Monsieur Philippe” (1904-1998), as his
workers said amicably - had to resolve to close the establishment.

Of the three villas of the Herrenschmidt family, whose tanneries closed in 1968, only one
has remained and today houses the Crédit Mutuel library on rue du Wacken.
A member of
the family says "The other two villas, including the one where I lived as a child, were
destroyed.
Nicolas's father, after the sale of the factory, had to rent an apartment in the
city.
In the Protestant tradition, the money was reinjected into the company.

In Strasbourg, economic power was more in the hands of bankers and
traders than in those of the industrialists: if Alfred and Fernand Herrenschmidt had....
