Hot and Dry Climates - geography. I-n-Salah, Algeria The pale pink shade of the map here indicates the hot and very dry climate of the Sahara. This pink shade represents much of the land surface of the globe between around 15 and 35 degrees north and south of the Equator, especially on the west sides of continents. These desert regions are dry because subtropical high pressure keeps rainfall low for much of the year (see Subtropical Deserts Map Trek).
