« Independence paper In the early 1600s, new land was conquered by European countries and Great Britain controlled the East Coast of the nowadays American continent.

The first colonie was created in 1607.

These new colonies were entirely controlled by Great Britain, and by the beginning of the 18th century tensions started to rise between England and the Americas.

Conflicts between the British and the colonists had been on the rise because the British government had been trying to increase control over the colonies and raise taxes at the same time, this led to the colonists wanting independence.

The American colonies were justified in breaking away from Great Britain because this country had failed them by using violence, the people of the American colonies should have the ability to replace a government/king they find unfit to rule, and the British parliament does not include the colonies in their decisions (no representation). Firstly, Great Britain, supposed to be their greatest ally, is failing the American colonists by using violence against them.

The Boston Massacre occurred on March 5 1770 when British soldiers in Boston opened fire on a group of American colonists killing five men.

The event in Boston helped to unite the colonies against Britain.

The battles of Lexington and Concord fought on April 19, 1775 were also one of the major factors of this separation because of the violence.

Thomas Paine in source 7 claims that the American colonies cannot be loyal to a country that has brought violence into their homes.

This reinforces the idea that the American colonists cannot respect and love a country that physically attacks them.

In brief the violence brought on by the British gives the American colonists a reasonable motive to want independence. Furthermore, after all the repeated injuries made by the king, the people should have the power to replace this unfit ruler.
