Toy Dog. Toy Dog, any of several breeds of very small dogs kept as pets. Some are naturally diminutive; others have been developed from larger dogs by selective breeding. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes the following toy breeds: Affenpinscher, Brussels Griffon, Chihuahua, Chinese crested, English Toy Spaniel, Italian Greyhound, Japanese Chin, Maltese, toy Manchester Terrier, Miniature Pinscher, Papillon, Pekingese, Pomeranian, toy Poodle, Pug, Shih Tzu, Silky Terrier, and Yorkshire Terrier.
