The American Dream, myth or reality ? The American Dream is the idea that any person living in the United States, through his work, his courage and determination can become rich, free and happy. If this idea has been taken by several persons or immigrants, the American social reality has disillusioned many immigrants. The idea was and still is the main reason for migration into the United States. This possibility for any immigrant to succeed from nothing was fortified by the territorial extent, natural resources, and the political and economic liberalism that characterizes the United States. This idea is as old as the discovery of the American continent, although its formulation has changed and we can think of the myth of Eldorado, or the conquest of the West. But many immigrants who left their country to find the wealth and freedom, but do not find the expected happiness. Indeed, they are the ones who will suffer the most by integration problems and poverty. They are nevertheless unskilled workers, willing to work for a pittance and often hired to replace workers. Thus, we are so far from the American dream as expected. However, we continue to believe in this dream, as it is always advocated through the literature (Of Mice and men by John Steinbeck), music and film (Rocky by John G. Avildsen), although despite this there remains a myth... "It's called the American dream because you have to be asleep to believe it" George Carlin.
