Simplify (mathematics). Simplify (mathematics), to convert a mathematical expression, such as a fraction or equation, to a simpler form by removing common factors or regrouping terms. The equation 4xy = 4xz, for example, has a common factor--4x--in the terms on each side of the equals sign. This equation may be simplified by dividing both terms by 4x, which in effect cancels the 4x term on each side, leaving y = z. The equation 2b - 7 = b + 5 may be simplified by regrouping terms. Variables are usually gathered on the left side of the equals sign, and constants on the right. The constants here can be gathered on the right by adding 7 to each side, leaving 2b = b + 12. The variables can be gathered on the left by subtracting b from both sides, giving b = 12--a much simpler equation than 2b - 7 = b + 5. Microsoft ® Encarta ® 2009. © 1993-2008 Microsoft Corporation.
