Greek Daughter of Minos of Crete
and of Pasiphaë; sister of Ariadne and Androgeus;
wife of Theseus, king of Athens. The love goddess
Aphrodite caused Phaedra to fall in love with her
chaste young stepson, Hippolytus. The youth fled
from her in horror and Phaedra killed herself, leaving a
letter to her husband accusing Hippolytus of trying to
violate her. Theseus then caused the death of his son.
This episode, where Theseus lost both his wife and his
son, seemed to mark the end of his heroic life.
