People in the Sun - - art. Edward Hopper's paintings express a sense of the vast, open spaces in the United States, and of the alienation of its citizens. People in the Sun, painted in 1960, is part of the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Sunlight and large, empty spaces became the real content of Hopper's paintings as his work progressed. The controlled palette, mostly blues and ochres, was also characteristic of Hopper's work.
