Roman Either an ancient Roman god of
the Underworld (2) or an alternative name for Dis,
the primary Roman god of this land of the dead.
Some scholars believe that Orcus had no individual
identity. Others argue from existing evidence
that Orcus was the bringer of death, rather than a
king of the dead, as was Dis. Orcus was sometimes
shown as a reaper, cutting down the corn with his
scythe, in sculptures and paintings on pottery.
Pluto was a euphemism, or name that was safe to
speak, that was sometimes used to refer to Orcus and
Dis in Rome and to Hades in Greece.
