Matisse's The Dance - - art. French artist Henri Matisse sought to express emotion in his painting, rather than provide factual representation, and he achieved this by means of intense color, simplified lines, and two-dimensional design. In The Dance (1909-1910, Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia) Matisse uses three colors--red, blue, and green--and five cavorting figures outlined against a flat background to communicate the joy and exuberance of dancing. © 2008 Succession H.
