American theoretical chemist and biologist Birth February 28, 1901 Death August 19, 1994 Place of Portland, Oregon Birth Known for Elucidating the nature of chemical bonds and the structures of molecules Winning the 1954 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his research into the nature of the chemical bond, and the 1962 Nobel Peace Prize for his work towards nuclear disarmament Career 1925 Received his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology 1931-1936 Taught at California Institute of Technology 1935 Applied quantum mechanics to the study of chemical bonds, and published the results in Introduction to Quantum Mechanics 1936 Became director of Gates and Crellin Laboratories; retained this position for 22 years 1939 Published The Nature of the Chemical Bond and the Structure of Molecules and Crystals, in which he summarized his work on molecular structure Did You Pauling is one of the few people who have received two Nobel Prizes. Know Like several great 20th-century scientists, Pauling was an ardent advocate of peace. Pauling championed the use of vitamin C to fight various illnesses.
