Polish-born English novelist and short-story writer Birth December 3, 1857 Death August 3, 1924 Place of Birth Berdychev, Poland (now Berdychiv, Ukraine) Known for Depicting his maritime adventures in rich, vivid prose Milestones 1874 Worked on a French ship as a sailor until 1878 1878 Worked as a sailor on British ships and wrote about his experiences at sea 1886 Earned the title of master mariner; became a British subject 1894 Settled in England 1895 Published his first novel, Almayer's Folly 1897 Published The Nigger of the Narcissus, a detailed narrative about an ailing black sailor 1900 Published the novel Lord Jim 1902 Published Heart of Darkness, a novella based on his own experiences working on the Congo River in 1890 1903 Published Typhoon and Other Stories 1904 Published the novel Nostromo, which explores political upheaval in a fictional South American country 1913 Published the novel Chance, the first of his works to bring him monetary success Quote 'We live, as we dream--alone.'
