Jaws Jaws, motion picture about a killer shark, based on the popular novel by Peter Benchley. Released in 1975, the film won Academy Awards for editing, musical score, and sound. This was director Steven Spielberg's first box-office hit. A great white shark terrorizes the oceanfront of a New England village. A police officer (played by Roy Scheider), an old sailor (Robert Shaw), and a young oceanographer (Richard Dreyfuss) do battle with the beast. The movie inspired a sequel, Jaws 2 (1978).
