Belen de Beaurepaire For Thursday September 18 2AS ART HISTORY PRELIMINARY INFORMATION André Derain Big Ben, 1905 The period of art movement is the Fauvism (1904-1908). ... (Must look on the internet "the medium") This painting is located in Troyes; it is in the Private collection of someone. THE SUBJECT In this painting, we can see that sunlight is reddish and the sky is getting darker so it must be during sundown. We can as well see that a boat is sailing on the Tamise. The subject matter is the sailing boat passing in front of the Big Ben in London. In the foreground we can see a river: the Tamise, and a sailing boat but we can't see anyone. On the right can see a bridge that crosses the river. The river is also used as a mirror to reflect to sky and the shapes of the BATIMENTS. The Big Ben is in the middle of the painting and at the top a little bit of light is observable. Any of the constructions are illumined because the sun in behind them so they are painted in blue to represent the shadow. In the background, we can see the sky: it isn't equal at all because on the right it's mostly green with some touches of light blue and on the upper left side of the painting, we can observe the sun. Derain didn't paint it like most artist do, he wanted to be in the heart of the fauvism and explode with colors, so the sun is represented not like a spot of light but like a fireball that illuminates us; the colors he used are (from middle to expansion) whit, yellow, red, pink, dark blue, blue, light blue and then some green that expands on the entire part of the sky. The artist must have drawn this painting from the opposite side of the Big Ben, across the river. This work is narrative because it just represents the movement of the boat passing in front of the Big Ben and the sun coming down. ... Incomprehension of the question. Don't know. Look on the Internet more info about the painting. Don't know. Look on the Internet more info about the painting. The style of this painting isn't completely realistic because we can't see anyone like if it were abandoned. If I had to describe the 'mood' of this painting, I would say that it's completely peaceful because no one is there, the person looking at this painting feels alone, the only noise is (le clapotis) of the water. And knowing that the sun is coming down makes us think that it isn't too hot or too cold, just a little cool which puts us in a comfortable position. Because of the technique that the artist uses, little brushstrokes, the lines are not defined so it curves all of the shapes and reduces the stoic lines that are around us. COLOUR Derain has used in the foreground: green, different kind of blues, yellow, orange and white for the river; blue, green, brown and red for the sailing boat; pink, blue, yellow, white, orange, green and black for the bridge. In he center only blue for the construction and in the background for the sky and the sun,
