German physicist Birth September 30, 1882 Death September 24, 1945 Place of Neustadt, Germany Birth Known for Inventing the Geiger counter, a device that measures levels of radiation Career 1906-12 Began research at the University of Manchester, where he quickly became an assistant to physicist Ernest Rutherford 1908 Developed, with Rutherford, an early version of his counter 1912 Became head of the Physikalische Technische Reichsanstalt in Berlin 1925 Accepted a position as professor of physics at the University of Kiel 1928 Perfected the Geiger counter Did You An experiment conducted by Geiger and British physicist Ernest Marsden (involving the scattering of alpha particles by gold foil) allowed Know British physicist Ernest Rutherford to deduce that atoms contain a compact nucleus.
