We could think that growing up is about discovering what life really is.
Indeed, when growing up , we acquire lot of responsibilities , so we realize the reality of the life , for example with the fact of having to manage money ( manage before by parents ) and so realize the heavy price of the life. Most of the time, we discover the people around us too , the nature of their relation with us ,which are often disappointing.
In spite of this , we discover some freedom too , a lot of possibilities of life, we us discover authors of our lives ( even if is just an impression ) , whereas before, the authors of our life was in part our parents.
So , yes, growing up is discovering what life really is , but the connotation is not necessary negative .
