The prohibition in the United States The prohibition, it's the interdiction to product, sell or buy alcohol. Prohibition in the United States was a national ban on the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol, in place from 1920 to 1933. The prohibition was established for several reasons: People noticed that the alcohol was bad for the health Workers were absent in the work because they were drunk Some Politicians had promised the prohibition to be elected. The first State who limited the sales of alcohols is Maine in 1851. In 1855, 13 States had established the prohibition, they were called "dry states". The prohibition was established on a national scale by the 18th amendment in 1920. The 18th amendment was supported by the Protestant church, and the women, who associated alcoholism and conjugal violence. Furthermore, because of the prohibition many breweries have to close or to convert in drink not alcoholized because since the prohibition, without alcohol, they have only a few customer, or no business anymore ! There were no customers anymore ! Like the drugs today ... people use to go to see the doctor to have medical prescriptions to get some alcohol. ...Moreover during the prohibition, alcohol was prescribed by the doctors, whiskey medicinal as the medicinal cannabis. Fichier:Prohibition prescription front.jpg Due to this interdiction of selling, buying or product alcohol, in the cities, various "speakeasies" (=Clandestine bar) (? because customers have to speak slowly when asking alcohol to not be hear) opened, these night clubs sold some alcohol often hidden in secret passage. Mafia groups limited their activities to prostitution The mafia seized this black market, by importing some alcohol from foreign countries by Canada or the Bermuda Islands, or by making it themselves. Because they made the alcohol themselves there were many deaths because the alcohol was badly prepared. Born in the in Brooklyn in New York City to Italian immigrants. Al Capone is a symbol of the prohibition, this Mafioso of Sicilian origin was managed the market of alcohol of Chicago. He was arrested by Eliot Ness (An agent of the American treasure) for tax evasion and was condemned for 10-year-old of prison to Alcatraz. The fight against the illegal market of alcohol was not very effective, because the police and the judges were corrupted by the mafia. The FBI chief was accused to be corrupted. The absence of taxes on the alcohol is a lack in gained by 500 million dollars every year. The opponents as the Against the prohibition Amendment ( AAPA ) association moved forward several arguments: the limitation of the personal freedoms, the ineffectiveness of the law, the loss of income on taxes and increase of the unemployment, an important question with the economic crisis of the 30's. Volstead Act was amended to authorize drinks little alcoholized as light beers thanks to Blaine Act of February 17th, 1933. The 18th amendment was removed during the same year by the ratification of the 21th amendment of the Constitution. The 18th amendment was removed in 1933 by the ratification of the 21th amendment of the Constitution, which cancelled the national prohibition in the United States, what allowed the State of rise of new taxes, and gives explicitly to States the right to limit or to forbid the purchase and the sale of alcohol When the prohibition stopped, the organized crime lost an important part of its income bound(connected) to the black market of alcohol, the direct consequence of the competition of alcoholic drinks on open sale in moderate prices. It retrained then into the sale of the other illegal drugs, the games and the prostitution. The organized crimes goes down ! The prohibition inspired fictions like : The untouchables (les incorruptible) by Brian de Palma in 1987 Once Upon a Time in America (Il était une fois en Amérique) by Sergio Leone 1984 Boardwalk empire (TV show). ? New movie about the prohibition : Lawless, by John Hillcoat
