“ Doping and drugs are unavoidable in sports” Nowadays, athletes have become icons and examples to a lot of people. They are “celebrities”: we can think of Zinedine Zidane, a very famous soccer player, Michael Jordan, a basketball player or even Usain Bolt, known as the fastest man in the world. Who wouldn’t want to overtake those famous men? Since a decade ago, sport’s industry is worth a lot of money. Sport is what all the countries have in common. Let’s face it, sports’ industry has become a huge business built around its athletes has multiple investors: supporters, companies, sponsors, and even government. The pressure is so intense that it is sometimes hard for some players to follow and they therefore give in to drugs. Sports are based on competition, and today more than ever, it is very tough. The fact that athletes have gained so much notoriety, has pushed them to use performance-enhancing drugs in order to be the best at what they do. They most likely feel the need to own up to people’s expectations. Drug abuse has been seen in almost every sport, more recently in cycling with Lance Armstrong. Nevertheless, drugs are not the sport’s industries only problem. Indeed, sport has become more and more important in a way that defeat is a humiliation for the whole country and victory is a pride. Since sports have gained so much scale, and loosing is not an option anymore, in addition to the doping problem, the industry has suffered cheating, fake betting, and cultural differences (for example, wearing the hijab during a competition). Let’s not generalize this drugs problem to all athletes. Sometimes ago, sports used to be a way of having fun, but now since it has become a business and because of all the pressure, the field had damaged: sport is became a racial and cultural competition, but also a mean to show who is superior.
