American physician, educator, and public health activist Birth October 14, 1916 Place of Brooklyn, New York Birth Known for Serving two terms as surgeon general of the United States Issuing an indictment against smoking, and advocating sex education to control the AIDS epidemic Career 1937 Graduated from Dartmouth College 1941 Received his M.D. from Cornell University 1947 Received a doctorate of science degree in medicine from the University of Pennsylvania 1948-1981 Served as surgeon-in-chief at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia 1959-1985 Taught pediatric surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine 1981-1989 Served two terms as surgeon general of the United States 1993- Taught at Dartmouth College Medical School Did You Koop observed many surgeries before he entered medical school, and was allowed to participate in a leg amputation when he was 19 years Know old. Koop stepped down as surgeon general four months before his term was scheduled to end, after his progressive sex-education and antismoking campaigns lost him the support of former conservative allies.
