2001: A Space Odyssey 2001: A Space Odyssey, science-fiction motion picture about extraterrestrial life, human evolution, and technology, directed by Stanley Kubrick and released in 1968. The film was based on the story "The Sentinel," written by British author Arthur C. Clarke and published in his short-story collection Expedition to Earth (1953). In the movie, a mission to investigate a mysterious obelisk on the surface of Jupiter goes awry when HAL, the supercomputer running the ship, endangers the lives of the people on board. The film's striking footage of moonscapes and of space stations spinning slowly across the solar system earned it an Academy Award for Special Visual Effects. The movie inspired a sequel, 2010 (1984). Director Stanley Kubrick Cast Keir Dullea (David Bowman) Gary Lockwood (Frank Poole) William Sylvester (Dr. Heywood Floyd) Daniel Richter (Moonwatcher) Leonard Rossiter (Smyslov) Margaret Tyzack (Elena) Robert Beatty (Halvorsen) Sean Sullivan (Michaels) Frank Miller (Mission controller) Alan Gifford (Poole's father) Penny Brahms (Steward) Edwina Carroll (Steward) Vivian Kubrick ('Squirt') John Ashley (Astronaut) Douglas Rain (Voice of HAL) Awards Academy Award for Special Visual Effects (1968): Stanley Kubrick British Film Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and Best Art Direction (1968) Quote HAL (to David Bowman): "I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal."
