The issue of education is nowadays very divided. This article, published in The New York Times in October and written by Eliza Shapiro, discusses the issue of integration in prestigious schools. This article tells us about a school in New York, in the Harlem district, which would be the proof that it is possible to integrate very selective schools. Eliza Shapiro presents TAG Young Scholars as one of the most successful schools in New York, but also as a school where diversity is encouraged thanks to its admission policy: more than a third of its students are black and Hispanic. Eric Crump, the father of a black student, later explains that any type of student can be gifted, not only whites and Asians. The issue of programs for gifted students is a real tyranny for New York's public school system. « Faced with so many inequalities in access to education in the United States, we may wonder what are the causes of these inequalities ? The number of opportunities depends on social status The school system in the United States is one of the least equal in the industrialized world.

Students have extremely different opportunities that vary according to the social status of their families.

An American child from a low-income family is less able to access quality university higher education than a child from a modest background in a European country, for example. Students from wealthy families have the opportunity to access quality university preparation, which is an important starting point for university admission.

It is no surprise, then, that only 10% of the students studying in the top 146 universities in the United States come from the lower middle class. Private financing of schools Even if each federal state funds its public schools in an equivalent way, each institution can supplement this funding with local fundraising.

As a result, schools in rich areas have the potential to receive much more private funding than schools in poor regions and neighbourhoods. Schools that receive significant funding can employ qualified teachers, have well-equipped classrooms and other benefits that have a daily impact on student training.

Federal states are trying to reduce these funding gaps, but this remains difficult because of the private contribution of public schools. Student loans This creates pressure on the learners' shoulders: the success of their studies and then the repayment of their debt. As a result, many middle-class people are not able to pay off their debts until they are 40 or 50 years old.

As a consequence, they cannot save like people from the wealthier classes who can pay off their debts.

As such, they find themselves in a vicious circle where it is difficult for them to improve their social status and pay in full for their children's education. In conclusion, inequality extends even if education is a fundamental right and all children should have equal opportunities to access quality education.

To reduce these gaps, it is necessary for the United States to adopt reforms in its education system to provide better opportunities for equal access to education for all students.. »
