« together again. Only then does she discovers a picture of Katherine and   notices that they are nearly identical in appearance. Soon after, we learn that   Katherine is not dead, and that they can save her. She is trapped in a tomb   with other 27 other vampires who had to die in a fire but Katherine's maid,   who was a Bennett witch, cast a spell to keep them alive. However, Katherine   and Elena have a lot of the same physically, but inside, they are totally the   opposite. Katherine is selfish, manipulative,and mean. Whereas Elena is nice,   cool, and takes care of the people that she loves. It is impressive how much   they both look alike.  After, Alaric Saltzman, a new teacher who is also a vampire hunter arrives.

  He knew  of the vampire's existence because he saw Damon bites to death   his wife right in front of him, called Isobel who is also Elena's biological   mother. Later, Stefan understands that Elena was adopted, so Elena and   Katherine are related. More than that, however, Elena is Katherine's   doppelganger, which means that she is the key to break the curse of the   moon and the sun against the werewolves and the vampires.  Even if Damon is a bad guy, Elena feels something for him, she is attracted to   him, but she tries to fight it because, she loves Stefan. Damon knows that   Katherine can be saved and he is going to try it but Katherine is a danger to   the town's population. At the beginning, Stefan and Elena don't agree with that, they even betray   him. However, at the end, they help him, but on one condition. If they do, only   Katherine is going to come out of the tomb. To open it, they need a witch,   that's why Bonnie and her grams will help them. Unfortunately, Damon   doesn't find Katherine and later, he learns that she never has been in. She   made a deal with a werewolf 145 years ago. The problem is that when they   open the tomb, it stays open so, unfortunately, all the vampires can go out.  If you wanna know more, then, WATCH THE SHOW !
